Fran Jurga is a well-known journalist and author with decades of experience in the horse industry. After years of reporting on equine assisted services, she set out to remedy the lack of a digital framework for EAS research. She holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from Simmons University and decided in mid-career to expand her ski
Fran Jurga is a well-known journalist and author with decades of experience in the horse industry. After years of reporting on equine assisted services, she set out to remedy the lack of a digital framework for EAS research. She holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from Simmons University and decided in mid-career to expand her skills with graduate studies in information science and digital stewardship. Fran was named a John H. Daniels Fellow to further her studies in 2017.
Since then, she has launched two research publications. Her "HoofSearch" index for hoof science and equine lameness research has been used in veterinary colleges and libraries, and earned many awards. It is also used by private practice veterinarians, farriers, equine physiotherapists, and other professionals around the world.
The EAS Research Report grew out of Fran's reporting on equine-assisted subjects while editing The Jurga Report for EquusMagazine.com from 2006 to 2017. Without a central place to go for the latest research, she felt that she could build one by applying indexing skills to update others interested in EAS research. The "RideSearch" project, launched in 2017, was reinvented as the EASR to make it openly available and useful to a wider audience of subscribers in 2023.

EASR is published in the quirky but picturesque Blackburn Tavern building in downtown Gloucester, Massachusetts. Opened as a grand hotel in the 1700s, the seaside building is in the National Register of Historic Places...and surely haunted.

Fran's office was once a hotel room and when she stays late to catch up on work (which she often does), she senses that she's definitely not alone. Famous artists, authors, schooner captains, and alleged pirates once roamed the old building's labyrinth of hallways. Fran is delighted to share their space.

Founded in 2017, the Equine Assisted Services Research Report indexes and shares the latest peer-reviewed journal articles, academic theses, conference proceedings, and patents relevant to professionals, educators, students and enthusiasts interested in horse-human interaction, therapeutic riding, equine assisted learning, veterinary social work, and therapies incorporating equines.
The index also covers research on the professions within EAS, management of EAS infrastructure and facilities, technology used in the field, adaptive equestrian sports, and especially the growing body of information on the selection, training, behavior, health and welfare of the horses that participate in EAS programs.
The EAS index is the latest publication in the growing stable of Fran Jurga and her well-established Hoofcare Publishing projects. Since 1985, Hoofcare Publishing has been an award-winning leader in equine publishing.
